Television Marketing - That Is, Marketing Your Television Show
Marketing a television show has traditionally depended on
large part on who you know, and who the people you know, know.
This point of frustration is common in many industries, but
seems particularly prevalent in the television marketing industry.
Everybody is familiar with the process Jerry went through
in those early episodes of Seinfeld when pitching his show
to NBC. Initially NBC approached him saying they would be
interested in a project. Then Jerry had to go and write
a pilot, and then pitch the pilot to even have it made.
Then even after the pilot was made, NBC had to sign off
on producing episodes of the show.
This is an example of a fairly standard procedure for seeing
a show come to life on mainstream network television in
North America. But it only represents the life-cycle of
a portion of the television shows that exist in the world,
and many other paths to success exist. The very first step,
being approached by a network to produce a pilot, isn't
exactly the real-world. In the real world people have ideas
for television content, and go ahead with script writing,
character development, pitch plans and an entire gambit
of pre-production work, long before it ever comes to the
attention of a network executive.
So what is one to do in order to market their television
content outside of the picture perfect scenario Jerry was
placed in? Depending on the stage of development that you're
currently at, IPEX VIEW may provide a platform to help you.
