Synopsis

Serge Aimé Coulibaly, that splendid performer of Alain Platel (Wolf) and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (Tempus Fugit), has set out to "revitalise the African choreographic heritage by shaping a contemporary gestural vocabulary." No mean ambition, and one that permeates this new work.
The neologism A benguer refers to those thousands of young Africans who, in search of a future they can believe in, spend their lives dreaming of leaving for Europe, and those who, having "broken through", endlessly return home. While poetic in tone, this is a highly physical piece giving expression to dream and disillusionment by setting a rap mode against traditional instruments.
