Synopsis

Drawing on some sixty portrayals of horses in the Louvre, this film recounts the great adventure of man's domestication of the horse. From Antiquity through the Middle Ages and down to the first half of the 19th century we see how the horse, a wild, hunted animal once regarded as an omen of death, became a symbol of human prestige and power.
Via this highly instructive history of the treatment of the horse in art, we also discover the personalities of those artists whose fascination with the animal led them to pay tribute to it.
As we look at these paintings and sculptures, we begin to understand what sparked their creator's interest. Down the centuries a succession of masterpieces shows the horse moving into the creative imagination, often in the form of a fabulously strange, divine creature. Oriental antiquities, medieval objects d'art and 18th-century paintings are only some of the avenues through which The Horses of the Louvre offers the viewer an equestrian saga covering an astonishing gamut of artistic and aesthetic forms.
