Synopsis

This 54-minute documentary looks back to the genesis of the Provençal tradition according to which Mary Magdalen, after witnessing the resurrection of Christ, travelled to Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, La Sainte-Baume and Saint-Maximin. It shows how, over the centuries, different images were attributed to her: sinner, disciple of Christ, preacher of the Gospel, hermit, figure of reconciliation, trustee of the Gnostic teachings, patron saint of the Dominican order – and today, figurehead for certain feminist movements.
Historians, writers, theologians and churchmen take us through a series of shifting roles that has made Mary Magdalen a kind of mirror of the key moments in Western thought.
