Synopsis
The Stone Diaries'won the Pulitzer Prize and was short-listed for the Booker Prize. 'Larry's Party' won the Orange Prize. Carol Shield's latest and sadly last novel 'Unless' was published to critical acclaim in May 2002. Three years ago she discovered she had stage-three breast cancer. Two days after diagnosis she underwent a mastectomy and then a six-month course of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Given exclusive access over a period of a year, this intimate profile weaves together interviews with Carol herself, extracts from her work and additional interviews, exploring the life and work of this gentle unassuming writer at the time of her crisis. Carol lost her battle with cancer on July 16th 2003.
