Synopsis

There is a very impressive monument amidst the skyscrapers of Battery Park in lower Manhattan, commemorating the 19th Century Irish Famine. The monument is a 150 year old deserted stone cottage, surrounded by rushes, grass and stonewalls. The cottage, which once stood in Bofield, Co. Mayo, was dismantled stone by stone to be shipped to the United States and rebuilt in New York City as the centerpiece of the Irish Hunger Memorial. The music for the opening ceremony was provided by the Bofield Ceilí Band. All teenagers and young adults, these members of the award-winning band were the only performers invited from Ireland to play at the opening of this remarkable memorial. This documentary from Esras tells their story and how they have worked to keep their musical traditions alive.
