Synopsis
When public education funding was slashed in the 1980s, America opened its doors to corporations' deep pockets. As Canadian schools faced budget shortfalls a decade later, most of the country followed suit.
As cash-strapped schools struggle to pay for books and other materials, corporate sponsors are offering promotions, sponsorships and even free curriculum. The line between corporate social responsibility and back-door marketing opportunities is blurring.
French Canada represents idealism in action as the schools in Quebec have successfully prohibited advertising to children for the past 20 years. And the tide of public opinion is turning in the U.S. as groups are joining forces to take back their classrooms.
This tough documentary asks, Should our schools be free of commercial messages? Or should they be a microcosm of the outside world where access is sold to the highest bidder?
